(WWJ) - A house explosion near Harbor Springs has killed a 73-year old man and his dog, police authorities said on Tuesday.

Officials confirmed Robert Mangus of Orchard Lake and his Golden Retriever were there only ones in the residence -- Mangus' wife and other family members were downstate at the time of the explosion.

"It was completely destroyed," Emmett County Sheriff Pete Wallin said of the house.

City fire department Captain, Richard Schiller, said to WWJ's Beth Fisher that he felt the blast from his residence -- six miles away -- before his fire pager went off.

Neighbors in the small, rural community were quick to call 911 and report the explosion -- no other homes were damaged according to Wallin.

Schiller described arriving at the scene as "chaotic."

"Every wall was on fire -- the house was basically collapsed at that point.... it's gone."

Schiller said the whole house exploded out in all directions, leaving the basement exposed to rescue workers and the glow of the fire could be seen for many miles.

Authorities said the cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
