OXFORD (WWJ) -- Oxford High School students will now be required to show ID's in order to enter the building following an incident last week that raised security concerns.

Last week, a student who was suspended was allowed to enter the building, increasing concerns about safety since the tragic mass shooting on Nov. 30.

Oxford School Superintendent Tim Throne released a statement on Facebook to the community Saturday where he detailed the incident and the stepped-up security measures OHS is taking in response.

In the statement, Throne wrote that the student who entered the building Thursday was involved in an incident at the high school on Nov. 4 involving a deer head on campus.

The incident did not include any threats to anyone at the school and was fully investigated by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the statement, the student was suspended through the end of the first semester and was expected to enroll in the school's virtual graduation alliance program for the second semester.

Throne wrote that the student came to school with the intention of attending class -- bringing a Chromebook in a district-issued bag and going to his classroom.

Upon noticing the student, a teacher immediately contacted administration. Security personnel and an Oakland County Sheriff's Office Detective escorted the student to the office and searched him and his belongings, according to the statement.

The student was said to be very remorseful for his behavior and its effect on fellow students and Oxford families.

Throne said that he shares in the "community's disappointment" that an unauthorized student was allowed to enter the high school campus.

Along with showing their current ID's, students will also need to have their clear backpacks visually inspected before entering the building.

Throne wrote that the doors close and lock at the start of the school day and each designated student entrance will continue to be staffed with security, administration and additional staff. Access to academic hallways will also be locked and closed.

The school will continue to have police presence during student entry as well as throughout the school day and early evening hours.
