OXFORD (WWJ) -- Oxford school officials are issuing "soft reopening" plans almost a week after the tragic school shooting massacre on Nov. 30 that left four students dead and multiple injured.
"At this time, our plan is to move slowly and gradually, balancing social and emotional needs with some low-stress academics," said Superintendent Tim Throne.
The reopening will feature a law enforcement presence as well as the presence of trained clinicians and counselors to support students and staff.
Although the Oxford school district said it will be "quite some time" before the high school will be ready to serve as an educational setting again.
The superintendent said the plan for the high school is "still evolving."
In the meantime, school officials are working to create opportunities for the students to be together in the community.
Coaches are working on securing locations for practices to start on Thursday; however, all athletic games and competitions are canceled for the week,
On Monday, the district's nutrition services department will distribute five days of meals for students and families at the Oxford Middle School gym from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
All staff, up through the 8th grade, will return on Thursday, Dec. 9, for a full day of trauma response training and planning.
Friday, all students up through the 8th grade will return for a half-day of school and move into their regular schedules on Monday, Dec. 13.
