OXFORD (WWJ) -- Therapy dogs and trauma specialists are greeting the Oxford Community Schools students returning to the building Monday.
After being out for a little more than a month, elementary and middle school students will be back in the classrooms, but the nearly 1,800 high school students are not going back so soon.
Superintendent Tim Throne said several measures have been put into place to make sure students and staff feel comfortable and safe.
Clear backpacks will be distributed as they are now a requirement for all students -- but the backpacks must be left in lockers or cubbies.
Police officers and private security will be visible at the school, along with a full-time resource officer for the middle school.
Therapy dogs, counselors and trained trauma specialists will also be available for all students and staff.
There will also be an in-person forum on Wednesday and Thursday to give parents a chance to discuss the reopening of the high school with administrators.
These new measures are a result of the mass shooting on Nov. 30 that killed four students and wounded seven others.
