OXFORD TWP. (WWJ) -- An Oxford Township man accused of shooting a killing a neighbor in an apparent case of mistaken identity has been charged with murder.
Marcus Nathan, 36, was arraigned in 52-3 District Court Friday and remanded into custody in the Oakland County Jail without bond in the case.
The shooting happened outside the Abbey Ridge Apartment Homes on East Market Street, where both men lived.
Investigators said Nathan claims he received a threatening text message early Wednesday morning. Officials said Kendrick was in his car, about to leave for work, when he was confronted by Nathan who'd been walking
around the complex parking lot looking for the person he claimed had threatened him.
Investigators said the two men did not know each other.
“This completely unnecessary and very tragic death should have never happened,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, in a statement. “The suspect randomly concluded a completely innocent man had threatened him and then murdered him. It is unjustifiable in any terms."
“The tragedy of the situation is magnified by the fact that the victim leaves a young son, a student of Oxford High School, who has already gone through enough trauma for a lifetime. It is appropriate the shooter should be held fully accountable.”
Authorities said Kendrick was a single father and a U.S. Army veteran.
Nathan's next court date is a probable cause conference set for May 5.
