(WWJ) – Thousands of people in Southeast Michigan are without power after a line of severe storms moved across the area on Sunday evening.

There were roughly 53,000 DTE Energy customers without power as of 7:50 p.m., according to the DTE Outage Map.

Around 4:15 pm. Sunday the National Weather Service issued the watch for Wayne, Washtenaw, Monroe and Lenawee Counties. It will remain in effect until 11 p.m.

The Watch extends into parts of Indiana and Ohio, impacting nearly 10 million people, according to the NWS.

Several other areas across the state are also under Tornado Watches, including Branch and Hillsdale Counties along the southern border.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has also been issued for many parts of the state. Locally, Macomb, Oakland and St. Clair Counties are under the Warning, which has been upgraded from the initially issued Watch. It is in effect until 11 p.m.

The NWS is advising anyone in an affected area to take shelter, as wind gusts were expected to reach anywhere from 60-70 mph, officials said earlier in the day.

The latest Watches and Warnings can be found on weather.gov.

The National Weather Service said “a couple tornadoes are possible,” while scattered wind gusts could reach up to 70 mph. Isolated hail the size of a quarter could be seen in some places.

The NWS says 3.5 million residents live in the areas under the Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

The Tornado Watch led organizers of the Livonia Spree to send festival goers home and cancel the fireworks planned for Sunday night.

"We ask that people leave the Spree grounds immediately and return to their homes," a statement on the event's Facebook page said. "We hope you had a great time this past week and look forward to seeing you June 25, 2024."
