State Police close eastbound I-96 in Detroit after pedestrian fatally struck by vehicle

DETROIT (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway after a pedestrian was struck and killed on I-96.

Michigan State Police were called to the scene on eastbound I-96 between Outer Drive and Evergreen just after 2:30 a.m. on Monday morning.

When troopers arrived, they located a Mercury Mariner parked on the right shoulder and a deceased male on the shoulder of the road near the vehicle.

The driver who alerted police said that he was traveling in the center lane when he observed a pedestrian standing in the middle of the freeway. The driver then attempted to stop, but was unable to avoid striking the man.

Troopers used a fingerprint scanner to identify the victim as a 26-year-old man, and are currently trying to locate his family.

The express lanes of I-96 at Outer Drive were closed for about three hours Monday morning, but have since been reopened.

There is no suspicion of drugs/alcohol, and the investigation is ongoing.
