DETROIT (WWJ) -- Gratiot Ave. has reopened to traffic in Detroit following a deadly crash, early Tuesday morning.
A stretch of Gratiot, between French and Conner roads, was shut down in both directions for several hours as police investigated the incident involving a pedestrian and an SUV.
Police received a call about the crash, at around 2:30 a.m., and arrived to find the unidentified victim in the roadway. He was pronounced dead by EMS on the scene.
"What we do not know is why would a man be crossing Gratiot, near Connor, at 2:30 in the morning? That's still unknown," WWJ's Charlie Langton reported. "But the man was hit by a Yukon with North Carolina plates, and that pedestrian was killed instantly."
The driver of the Yukon did stop at the scene and is cooperating with police.
No one else was injured.
No other information is being released at this time, as the investigation continues.
