(WWJ) Michigan State Police are investigating a shooting along I-75 in what they believe may have been an act of revenge.

Just before 5:15 a.m. Thursday, troopers from the MSP Tri-City Post responded to a call about about shots fired on southbound I-75 near Birch Run Rd. near Birch Run Township.

Upon investigating, they found that two vehicles had been struck by gunfire, but no injuries were reported.

Troopers contacted the Saginaw Major Crimes Unit (MCU) for help and were able to establish that this was not a "random" shooting, police said.

MSP Lt. Kim Vetter told WWJ's Sandra McNeill that investigators believe it was an act of retaliation after an 8-year-old girl was shot inside her home, on 17th Ave. in Saginaw, early Wednesday morning.

In that shooting, Vetter said a preliminary investigation found that someone outside the home fired the shots, just after 2 a.m., striking the child.

The girl was hit by one bullet and suffered serious injuries. No one else was hurt.

There have been no arrests in either shooting, and police have not named or described any suspects.

MSP said the MCU is having some trouble moving forward in the investigation into these crimes, because the witnesses they do have refuse to cooperate.

Vetter is pleading with the public to come forward in both incidents to get some dangerous people off the streets.

She said a lack of cooperation is an ongoing problem.

"People who witness a crime or witness the after actions of the criminals, people who have knowledge of the criminal acts are reluctant to speak with police," Vetter said.

Anyone with information about these incidents is urged to report it to Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-422-5245, or contact a detective at Saginaw MCU at 989-759-1289. Tipsters may also reach out via the Saginaw Police Facebook page.
