(WWJ) -- A man is dead and his son is in police custody after a shooting at a home in a quiet Brighton neighborhood.

Police were called to the home on Woodlake Drive near U.S. 23 and Lee Road Monday morning after the man’s daughter called to report her 18-year-old brother had shot their father.

The man’s son fled the scene, before police were able to call him on the phone and convince him to come back to Brighton and turn himself in.

Brighton Police Chief Rob Bradford tells WWJ the teen was taken into custody without incident and refuted reports that there was a pursuit.

The victim was 48-year-old Canton police officer, Edward Jagst.

As 21-year veteran with the department, Jagst was an active patrol officer who participated in several special units including Evidence Technician, Training Instructor, Bicycle Unit, and as a Criminal Investigations Detective.

He also served on the department’s Honor Guard, standing watch over formal ceremonies for 16 years, and worked as a resource officer for Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.

"Officer Jagst was a remarkable man who was strong in his faith, and was a truly loving husband and father,” said Chad Baugh, Canton Police Department Deputy Director. "He was a shining example of love and service, and our Canton Police family, past and present, consider ourselves fortunate to have known him. Our hearts go out to the Jagst family at this time of tragedy."

Authorities say they are still looking into a motive for the shooting, but police and prosecutors are still investigating and charges could be filed as early as Tuesday afternoon.
