HARPER WOODS (WWJ) - Authorities confirmed two fatalities during a barricaded situation in Harper Woods on Friday, with one victim identified as the suspect's 45-year-old mother.
A second victim, a 52-year-old man, was also killed, Jason Hammerle, Director of Public Safety, said in a press release on Saturday. His relationship to the suspect was not released.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 p.m. in the 19000 block of Woodside Street between Kelly and Beaconsfield on Sept. 2 after a call reported an armed suspect had shot a woman in the chest.
As officers with the Harper Woods and Grosse Pointe Special Response Team surrounded the home, the young man barricaded himself inside with hostages.
"After several minutes of negotiation, [police] were able to apprehend the suspect with no injuries to officers or suspect," Hammerle said.
The 19-year-old suspect was led out of the house by police, WWJ's Ryan Marshall reported from the scene. He was visibly laughing and reportedly spat in an officer's face.
"Now police and SWAT just a few minutes ago took someone out on a stretcher and placed in them in an ambulance," Marshall reported, just after 3 p.m..
Neighbors told Marshall on Friday that they heard the suspect had shot his stepfather and his mother, and that the shooter's grandparents were also in the house at the time.
Police said they are awaiting autopsy results from the two victims to confirm to the cause of death.
Charges against the suspect are pending, but Hammerle said they expect an arraignment on those charges in the coming days.
"Our thoughts are with the families of the victims at this time," Hammerle said.
