Police discover body of missing 24-year-old Wayne County man

ROCKWOOD, Mich. (WWJ) -- Monroe County authorities have announced the recovery of a missing 24-year-old man after finding his deceased body.

Nicholas Russel O’Neal was last seen at around 9:30 p.m. on the Fourth of July, according to the Rockwood Police Department.

Police said O'Neal's vehicle was found at the Sigler Road entrance to the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area, east of the U.S. turnpike. It's an area popular for hiking and hunting, with woods, marshes and wetlands.

Search efforts by land and by air were ongoing on Wednesday.

The Sheriff’s Office deployed members of their Canine Team and Drone Aviation Unit in conjunction with members of the Berlin Township and Estral Beach Fire Departments to search the vast area of land in an attempt to locate O'Neal.

The search ended on Tuesday at 11 p.m. and resumed at 6 a.m. on Wednesday. Due to the challenging terrain, the Sheriff’s Office said they deployed four members of their Mounted Division as well as five members from the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Division.

At approximately 2:40 p.m., members of the Mounted Division located O'Neal's body.
