SOUTH HAVEN (WWJ) -- Authorities in West Michigan have released the names of two young people who drowned in Lake Michigan off South Haven over the weekend.
South Haven Police said the couple has been identified as 22-year-old Kory Ernster of Novi, and 19-year-old Emily MacDonald of St Clair County's Columbus.
Police said the victims' were unresponsive when they were pulled by bystanders from the water at South Beach, early Monday afternoon.
They were later pronounced dead in the hospital.
"Our thoughts and condolences are with both families," police said, in a statement.
There was a yellow flag up at the time of the drownings, which signals "moderate" surf and currents. The alert was raised to a red flag later in the day, which signals that swimming is not advised, due to the potential for dangerous currents.
These drownings happened not even 24 hours after crews recovered the body of a 21-year-old swimmer who was swept offshore in Grand Haven.
Officials say more than 70 people have drowned in the Great Lakes this year.
