(WWJ) A 9-year-old girl is in the hospital after an apparent accidental shooting in her home.

According to a preliminary investigation, the child was home with a sibling in the 1500 block of Fordam in Detroit, just after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when it's alleged she found and picked up a gun.

As she was handling the weapon, police were told, the gun discharged and the child was shot once in the body.

The little girl's mother took her to local hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

Police said no adults were home at the time of the shooting. Other circumstances remain under investigation.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Detroit Police Department’s Ninth Precinct Investigative Unit at 313-596-5940 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 1-800-Speak Up (1-800-773-2587).

Police noted that all of this is preliminary information and subject to change upon further investigation.

As always, police urge all gun owners to keep their guns securely locked up and away from children -- either in a gun safe or with a trigger lock or both. Gun locks may be available for free from police in your community, so check with your local police department.
