(WWJ) -- A pregnant Manistee woman is being called a hero after she pulled three kids to safety while they were struggling in the waters of Lake Michigan.
Alyssa DeWitt was at the First Street Beach in Manistee on Tuesday when she noticed arms waving in the water. She realized rip currents had pulled three kids out deeper and they were struggling to get out of danger.
DeWitt jumped into action and ran to the edge of the pier to see if she could help them. DeWitt called 911 but realized there likely wasn’t enough time to wait for first responders.
She laid over the side of the pier and had each child reach for her hand and she managed to pull all of them to safety.
During the harrowing rescue, one of the girls looked at DeWitt and told her “I’m going to die,” according to a story from MLive.
“I said, ‘I promise you. I’m not going to let you die out here. I will get you out of this water,’” DeWitt said.
All three kids were under the age of 15, according to MLive, but the exact ages were not disclosed.
DeWitt, who is five months pregnant, was checked out at an emergency room. She and the baby are both fine.
DeWitt says she doesn’t know how she was able to pull off the rescue.
