LENOX TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A stabbing at the Macomb Correctional Facility landed one prisoner in the hospital on Friday after authorities say a fellow inmate attacked him with a weapon during an argument.
Chris Gautz, the Public Information Officer with the Michigan Department of Corrections, confirmed the incident at the Macomb Correctional Facility on 26 Mile Road in Lenox Township with WWJ's Taylor Dietz, stating the incident was spurred on by a disagreement between two prisoners.
The argument escalated, Gautz continued, and one prisoner attacked the other, stabbing him several times in the head, neck and hands.
Both inmates were provided medical attention by the prison nursing staff, but Gautz said the prisoner who was stabbed was taken by an ambulance to an off-site hospital for further treatment of his injuries.
Michigan State Police is at the scene to conduct their investigation per protocol.
Gautz said prison officials are conducting their own internal investigation into the incident and are trying to recover the weapon used in the attack.
After MSP finishes their reports, Gautz added that it will be forwarded to the county prosecutor for review with the "hope the prosecutor will seek charges."
No other details about the incident were provided by authorities.
