DETROIT (WWJ) -- It’s been three years since construction started on the new Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Now, recent photos posted to the project’s website show visible progress happening in both southwest Detroit and Windsor.
The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said on Thursday that construction has also started on the first building at the U.S. Port of Entry.
Concrete footings for the building, which is the first of 13 to be built, have now been poured, and work on the main building is expected to start soon.
Three buildings at the Canadian Port of Entry are currently under construction, and parts of the bridge towers can also be seen in the updated photos posted on Wednesday.

Set for completion in 2024, the bridge -- which is named for the late Red Wings legend -- will connect Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan, south of Historic Fort Wayne in southwest Detroit.
Running one-and-a-half miles in length and spanning six-lanes, the project will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, according to officials.

It will be a third option for travel between Detroit and Windsor, along with the privately-owned Ambassador Bridge, and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
