Some Michiganders were startled by a loud Public Safety Alert sent by state officials to millions of cell phones on Wednesday, reminding residents about the "three-week pause" -- which began today and runs through Dec. 8.

During this time, restaurants and bars will be closed for indoor service, by order of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Casinos, movie theaters, bowling alleys and ice rinks are also shut down in an effort to curtail the spread of the coronavirus.

During this time, all colleges and high schools in the state are restricted to virtual learning.

There are also some updated rules regarding the mask mandate, which remains in effect in all public indoor spaces and crowded outdoor spaces. (Questions? CLICK HERE).

During this time, MDHHS is recommending Michiganders organize and stick to "social pods." A social pod is a core group of friends or family who agree to limit their in-person social activities to only each other, and practice physical distancing with anyone outside the group. Being part of a pod allows members to continue seeing people outside their household while reducing the risk of spreading COVID-19.

This all comes as the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the state are surging to the highest levels yet, and health systems are nearing capacity.

The state added 7,458 confirmed cases and 79 deaths on Tuesday, bringing Michigan's pandemic totals to 272,034 confirmed cases and 8,128 deaths.
