CLINTON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- A puppy is fighting for his life after being rescued from a Clinton Township apartment fire on Wednesday night that left several animals trapped.

The Clinton Township Fire Department said firefighters put out the flames quickly at the Farmbrooke Manor Apartments, near 16 Mile and Groesbeck, but smoke filled the apartment and multiple animals couldn't escape.

Eleven pets ended up dying in the smoke-filled building, but the one provided with life-saving care is currently in an oxygen chamber. After firefighters, EMTs and police officers gave the puppy CPR, he is now at the Macomb County Animal Shelter receiving treatment.

"Our firefighters always give their best when it comes to saving any life. Most of us are proud parents of pets and it’s always devastating to see these things happen. Witnessing the anguish of the owners weighs on you -- the loss of pets and the toll it takes is often overlooked," said Clinton Township Fire Chief Brian Fraley. "Fortunately our firefighters, EMS providers and local veterinarians make every effort to save a pets life. When we are able to do this it makes a terrible situation a bit more tolerable."

Shelter officials have named the puppy Phoenix. Like the mythical creature, they say they're hoping he rises from the ashes with renewed youth to live again.

The shelter is currently accepting donations for his care.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
