RIVERVIEW, Mich. (WWJ) -- A newly elected Riverview City Council member is in trouble with the law after allegedly drunk driving and crashing his car about 24 hours after being elected.
David Robbins of Riverview was elected to the Riverview City Council in the Tuesday, Nov. 2 election.
Around 1:38 a.m. on Nov. 4, the 34-year-old Robbins was allegedly intoxicated and driving his car at a high rate of speed when he crashed it into a tree in the median of Fort Street, near Voight Avenue in Riverview, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
Robbins then fled the scene on foot, the prosecutor's office said.
Robbins has been charged with one count of operating while intoxicated, one count of reckless driving and one count of leaving the scene of an accident.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy called it “a dangerous event” that was put in motion by Robbins’ decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
“It’s shocking and disappointing that this happened less than 24 hours after he was elected to the Riverview City Council,” Worthy said, per a pres release.
Robbins was arraigned on Wednesday in 27th District Court and received a $5,000 bond, or 10%.
He was also ordered to wear an alcohol tether. He’s due back in court on Nov. 24.
It was not clear whether Robbins will remain in his elected position.
Riverview is a Downriver community with a population of about 12,000.
