ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- Despite a rallying cry from the local community over the past several months, the Main Art Theatre met its end today in Royal Oak.
Considered an institution for the arts in Metro Detroit, the Main has stood on Main Street near 11 Mile Road for more than eight decades.
Plans to raze the structure and replace it with a five-story, mixed-use building featuring condos, offices and retail space first surfaced earlier this year, and were approved in April by the Royal Oak Planning Commission.
On Monday, curtains officially closed on the historic building, as bulldozers flattened the site.
The theater - which was beloved by local movie buffs for showing independent and cult classic films – shut its doors last summer following the COVID-19 pandemic.
A note on the Main's iconic marquee read "Landlord kicked us out. It’s been a fun ride."
