SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) – Police in Shelby Township are warning residents about a new scam aimed at getting inside people's houses.
Police officials learned of the scam after a resident received an official-looking flier for a fake program trying to get homeowner information, including codes to their garage doors or lockboxes for police to keep on file in case of emergency.
Officials say they are “unaware of such a program to collect homeowner info” in the county. Police are investigating the source of the flier. It was not immediately clear if other residents also received fliers or if they were found in other Macomb County communities.

The flier instructs people to call the “Macomb County Dispatch non-emergency line” at (586) 469-3002, which is not the real number associated with police.
Residents are then told to “let them know that you have either a garage door code or lockbox code that you would like associated with your address.”
The flier then says to provide your address and codes, in essence giving the scammers access to the home.
“STPD reminds our residents to never give information regarding your home, and always contact local law enforcement through verified and properly vetted numbers with concerns such as this,” officials said, noting in-person visits are best.
