HARRISON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- Local, state, and federal officials are trying to land some Air Force next-Gen fighter jets at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
The base, located in Harrison Township between I-94 and Lake St. Clair, is among five being considered across the country as an international F-35 training center, WWJ’s Mike Campbell reports.
Selfridge 127th Wing spokesman Phillip Ulmer tells WWJ that the base would house up to 36 F-35 fighter jets to train student pilots and support personnel from Singapore, Poland, Finland and Switzerland.
Along with Selfridge, other bases that are being considered by the Air Force to become the new international training center include Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado, Fort Smith Regional Airport in Arkansas, Hulman Field in Indiana, and Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.
