WARREN (WWJ) -- It was quite a messy scene Thursday morning in metro Detroit when a semi-truck erupted into flames, closing I-696 and causing a major backup.

According to Michigan State Police and Warren Police Commisioner Bill Dwyer, around 5 a.m., a semi-truck driver was traveling westbound on I-696 near Mound Road when he noticed a fire in his cab.

The driver pulled over and tried to put the fire out, but it managed to spread to his fuel tank, which caused fuel to leak out unto the road and the tank to blow up.

The explosion of the fuel tank ignited the load of wooden pallets he was carrying into flames, which shot up to about 20 to 30 ft in the air.

The Warren Fire Department was able to put out the fire, but officials are warning drivers to avoid the area until Thursday afternoon as the clean-up continues and before the Michigan Department of Transportation gives the approval to reopen.

No injuries were reported.
