DETROIT (WWJ) -- There was quite a mess on the Lodge Freeway Wednesday morning when a semi-truck carrying literal tons of gravel overturned.
According to WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell, at around 9 a.m. on northbound M-10, a double-bottom gravel hauler flipped onto the driver's side and skidded 40-50 yards past the Northlawn Avenue pedestrian bridge, just before the Wyoming exit.
The semi came to rest with its front and back pinned between the median and right shoulder wall. The truck, which can carry up to 40 tons of gravel, ended up spilling all of its contents onto the freeway.
WWJ's Campbell reports that crews had to use a front-loader to scoop up all the gravel that was then put into another double-bottom gravel hauler. The semi had to be completely flipped onto its wheels before they could get it out of the way.
This mess caused the freeway to close for hours -- first at Livernois, and then all the way back to Davison because of the increase in traffic back-ups. The closure ended up lasting around four hours.
At this point, it's unknown what caused the semi to flip over.
