MONROE COUNTY (WWJ) - A Detroit woman has died after being hit by a big rig while walking in the road Downriver.

The 55-year-old woman was wearing dark clothes and walking in the right lane of Telegraph Road north of Carleton Rockwood Road, in Ash Township, when she was hit by the semi, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The Flat Rock Police Department first reported the crash just after 5:30 a.m. on southbound Telegraph at Will Carleton Road. At the time, authorities only said the wreck was "serious" and traffic would be diverted onto either Will Carleton or South Huron River Drive.

In an afternoon update at 8.a.m., the sheriff's office said the woman came to rest on the west side gravel shoulder of Telegraph, while the truck came to a controlled stop on the northbound shoulder, and right travel lane after crossing the centerline in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, 40-year-old Gordon Woodard of Ypsilanti, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was not injured, according to the sheriff's office.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, officials said.
