(WWJ) The FBI says several people in Michigan are now under investigation for alleged crimes during last week's deadly riot and siege at the U.S. Capitol.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Tim Waters of the Detroit Field Office declined at this time to release any names or specifics about those under investigation, while he stressed that the agency continues to seek tips from the public.
"The FBI is using all tools at our disposal to identify all those who took part in the violence at the Capitol. Our intent is to work with the U.S. Attorney's Office to hold those who participated in criminal activity accountable for their actions," Waters said on Friday.
Who is it exactly that the FBI is looking for?
"Our focus is on identifying violent agitators and extremists, who use the guise of First Amendment protected activity to incite violence and wreak havoc," Waters said. "We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to identify, investigate and to disrupt these individuals in line with the FBI's mission... That is to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution of the United States."
On the day of the U.S. Capitol breach, Jan. 6, six Michigan residents were arrested; most of them for violating D.C.'s emergency 6 p.m. curfew.
On a national level, authorities say more than 30 people have thus far been taken into custody on federal charges relating to the historic incident, in which five people, including a Capitol Police officer. were killed. Dozens more were injured.
