MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) -- The cause of a home explosion that led to evacuations in Mount Clemens Wednesday night is still unknown, as authorities continue to investigate.

According to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, a 30-year-old resident of a two-story condominium, along with his brother, suffered minor burns in the fire Wednesday night, on Mark St. near N. Rose.

After multiple 911 calls came in about the explosion and fire, at around 9 p.m., deputies arrived to find that the two men had made it out safely, and that no one else was inside.

The sheriff's office said the resident remained on scene, but "gave very little details" as to what had happened.

Mt. Clemens, Harrison, and Clinton Township Fire Departments all responded, and residents in the area were evacuated.

The man's 25-year-old brother, who was also inside the condo when it happened, left the scene before first responders arrived. While he did return to be checked out by EMS, he refused to speak with deputies, according to the sheriff's office.

Both men were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor burn injuries.

Thursday morning, WWJ's Jon Hewett reported the American Red Cross was on scene helping residents in adjoining damaged units pack up and find a place to stay.

The sheriff's office said Macomb County fire investigators were looking into what happened, but could not go inside the unit. Officials said heavy damage to the front of the home had made the structure unstable.

While early reports on the incident stated that a natural gas leak was suspected, the sheriff's office did not note that in a news release issued Thursday, saying only that the cause of this explosion remains under investigation at this time.
