
(WWJ) – For nearly 20 years, it’s been against state law for school districts in Michigan to start the school year before Labor Day, but more and more districts have received waivers from the state to move the start day up.
The latest school district to entertain the idea is Livonia Public Schools, laying out a plan they say would benefit academic and athletic programs, as well as ease concerns they say families have about the late end to the school year.
As the public debates what would be best for the students, WWJ’s Zach Clark learns on a new Daily J podcast the decision of when to start school can have a far bigger impact that many people realize, including on the state’s tourism industry.
