(WWJ) – Metro Detroiters woke up to another dose of snow on a cold March Sunday morning.
Area roadways were slick, with several crashes causing trouble spots on the freeways, including a closure of I-696 due to a pile-up crash at Hoover, near Warren.
Warren police tell WWJ that pile-up crash involved more than 30 vehicles. No serious injuries were reported in that crash.
Sunday's slippery conditions led to the crash, which left I-696 closed for about two hours. It was one of several freeway closures on Sunday morning.
While Sunday’s snow wasn’t as bad as some of the storms that hit Metro Detroit throughout the winter, some areas saw heavy snow squalls throughout the morning.
The NWS says some spots in Southeast Michigan could see 2-3 inches of snow by early afternoon, while areas further north were only expected to get about an inch.
Officials say drivers should use extra caution on the roads, as falling snow could produce periods of low visibility and slick road conditions.
WWJ traffic reporter O'Neill Stevens said he saw three crashes on his way into the studio on Sunday, including a spin-out in a residential neighborhood as someone took a turn too fast.
"It's very deceiving, so allow for time," he said. "Their speed is just way too fast, and it doesn't take much."
The NWS said winds could gust up to 30 mph throughout the day, causing some areas to experience blowing snow.
The snow tapered off by the early afternoon, and AccuWeather is calling for temperatures to climb into the low 40s on Sunday. Those temps will continue climbing the rest of the week, even potentially reaching as high as 65 degrees on Thursday.
The snow put a bit of a damper on St. Patrick's Day Parade festivities in Detroit, but many Metro Detroiters were still hitting the streets of Corktown to celebrate.
