(WWJ) The southbound Southfield Freeway, M-39, is closed to traffic Monday afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash involving a jackknifed semi.

WWJ's Tracy McCaskill reports the truck crash into a cement barrier at around noon, leading to a complete closure of all southbound lanes.

Drivers should try to avoid the area.

It was not immediately clear what led to the crash. There are no reports of any injuries, but there was damage to the median wall.

MDOT's Diane Cross said cleanup is expected to take some time.

"Hydraulic fuel, hydraulic oil — whatever the materials are from the crash — are being cleaned up off the roadway," she told WWJ's Sandra McNeill just before 1:30 p.m. "Once we get that done we'll be able to reopen southbound. (We) also have to have the vehicles towed away; the heavy-duty tows to come and get the semi and the other vehicles that were involved."

Emergency crews remain on the scene.

Drivers approaching the crash site should expect backups to begin after Warren Rd.

Traffic should exit the freeway at Ford Road to either the M-39 Service Drive or head west to Telegraph or Greenfield roads.

There is also a slowdown on the northbound side of the freeway with the left lane blocked in the same area due to a crash. As of 12:30 p.m., there were backups to Rotunda.
