MARSHALL, Mich. (WWJ) -- Have you seen this calf?

Michigan State Police troopers are asking for tips from the public as they investigate the theft of a young cow from the 8000 block of 13 Mile Road in Fredonia Twp., in southwest Michigan's Calhoun County.

Releasing a photo of the animal with its mother, MSP said the missing animal — presumed stolen — is a "Wagyu calf."

While MSP did not mention a dollar figure, this calf is no doubt worth a lot of money.

According to the American Wagyu Association, Wagyu cattle are highly prized for producing "the finest beef in the world" — not only rich in flavor, but containing a higher percentage of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids than typical beef.

The word Waygu refers to Japanese beef cattle, where 'Wa' means Japanese and 'gyu' means cow. In the U.S., according to Food & Wine, Wagyu must be of at least 46.875% pure Japanese blood to qualify by USDA standards.

Anyone with information about the missing calf is asked to call the MSP Marshall Post at 269-558-0500, or dial 911.
