DETROIT (WWJ) - A man is in custody after setting fire to a gas station on Detroit's west side Tuesday morning.
The suspect was seen on surveillance camera dumping a trash can full of gas inside the door of the gas station on 7 Mile between Evergreen and Lahser just after 3 a.m. on June 20.
The suspect then took out a blow torch and set fire inside the store and ran away. Footage of the arson was share during a Tuesday afternoon press conference.
Detroit Police Chief James White said at the press conference the suspect had been arrested. No information on the suspect was released.
A motive in the case has not been determined.
The employee in the gas station was injured after running through the blaze but is expected to recover, White said.
WWJ's Mike Campbell reported from the scene the gas station sustained damage not only the from the blaze, but also from water sprinkles from the building's fire suppressant system, which has been running nonstop.
"There's water coming out, but the inside has been torched and there was an employee inside who suffered some minor injuries," Campbell said. "I'm told he's going to be OK and is at the hospital now."
The gas station is a part of the city's Project Green Light program, which allows the Detroit Police Department to monitor locations in real time.
"They have the video of the suspect and they're going to release some photos and apparently these are good photos," Campbell said before the suspect was arrested.
The gas station remained closed Tuesday as police continued to assess the scene and clean up efforts began. The owners told Campbell they've been at that location for 22 years and have never had a problem.
"They like it here and the customers like them," Campbell said.
