DEARBORN (WWJ) -- An 18-year-old man has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 6-year-old girl in Dearborn.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement on Friday that Jyon Collins of Detroit would be arraigned for failure to stop at a scene resulting in death, and for driving without a license -- a five-year felony and misdemeanor, respectively.
Collins voluntarily turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday, several days after the crash.
Batoul Haider-Alfawdawi was struck and killed on Sunday, Nov. 7 just before 3 p.m. while visiting her grandmother in a Dearborn residential neighborhood.
According to prosecutors, the defendant was allegedly driving southbound on Bingham Street when he hit the 6-year-old girl.
The child was apparently crawling under a parked car, and another vehicle parked behind it obstructed Collins' view of the victim at the time of the incident.
The hit-and-run was caught on a neighbor’s surveillance camera and shows a silver or white Chevy Equinox speeding down the street right before the moment of impact.
The driver, alleged to be Collins, did not stop at the scene.
Emergency workers rushed the girl to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, where she later died from her injuries.
Collins was arraigned via Zoom on Friday afternoon in 19th District Court before Judge Eugene Hunt, and given a $50,000, 10% bond. If he posts bond, he is ordered to remain on house arrest with a GPS tether.
He is expected back in court for a probable cause hearing on Nov. 24.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help support Batoul Haider-Alfawdawi's family.
