(WWJ/AP) A man stabbed a police dog, charged a deputy and was fatally shot, according to authorities in southwestern Michigan.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to a home in Gobles, west of Kalamazoo, at around 7:30 p.m. Monday on a report of a domestic assault.

Deputies were greeted by the suspect's wife, who said she'd been assaulted by her 39-year-old husband, according to local station News Channel 3.

The man was known to police and had multiple warrants out for his arrest, officials said.

About two hours later, deputies sent in a police dog to try to force out the man, who was hiding in a crawlspace, but the K9 was stabbed three times.

Sheriff Dan Abbott told the TV station that a K9 handler was able to get the dog out of the house and tried to get the suspect to surrender.

The man had a knife and charged deputies, according to Abbott. Deputies deployed a stun gun, but it had no effect. When the man allegedly continued to charge, a deputy shot him.

In a statement, the sheriff's office said lifesaving efforts were attempted, but the suspect died at the scene.

The dog — named "Kuno," according to reports — was being treated by a veterinarian for its wounds.

Kuno was reported in stable condition Tuesday morning, but Abbott said the dog may need to be transferred to Michigan State University for further care.

The name of the suspect has not been released.
