CANTON (WWJ) – Police in Illinois have arrested a man accused of fatally shooting another driver on Haggerty Road in Canton during what was believed to be a road rage incident last month.
Canton police officials say the suspect, whose name has not been released, was arrested on July 7 in connection with the death of a 37-year-old Belleville man.
The suspect is awaiting extradition back to Michigan to face charges for the shooting.
Authorities say 33-year-old Maria Phillips was arraigned on June 16 on felony charges of being an accessory after the fact. The victim, whose name has not been disclosed, died the same day Phillips was arraigned.
She is being held on $500,000 bond.
Police say the shooting happened on June 10 at the height of rush hour traffic along Haggerty, between Palmer and Michigan Avenue. Police said at the time the shooting may have been related to a traffic altercation, though details remained unclear.
Police officials said the suspect fired multiple shots at the victim, who was listed in critical condition for nearly a week before he died.
The shooter was said to be driving a gray Chevy Equinox at the time of the shooting. Authorities did not say where in Illinois the man was arrested.
