DETROIT (WWJ) – In what Detroit police call a "major arrest," man is in custody in connection with a fatal shooting at a Detroit market and a robbery at a beauty supply store.

Detroit police say they arrested the suspect who fatally shot a 64-year-old employee at Andy’s Market – near 8 Mile Road and the John C. Lodge Freeway – on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The suspect’s name and age were not immediately disclosed, but police say he was also wanted for an armed robbery at the Golden Beauty Supply shop in the 17500 block of 7 Mile Road, near the Southfield Freeway.

Authorities did not say when the alleged beauty shop robbery took place.

Police said last week the suspect walked into the market on Jan. 17 and acted like he wanted to buy some liquor.

When the clerk, 64-year-old Benham Rasho, opened a door to exit the cash register area, the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and fired shots, fatally striking the victim.

The suspect then pointed a gun at another employee and demanded two cash register drawers.

The suspect fled the scene, but police did not say how much money he got away with.

Police noted last week that Andy's Market is a Project Green Light location and the entire incident was captured on surveillance video, so they felt confident they would catch the suspect.

“This is excellent police work by our officers to get a dangerous suspect off the streets,” Detroit Police Chief James White said, per a press release. “We continue to relentlessly pursue dangerous criminals who pose a threat to our community. My sincere thanks to our Special Response Team (SRT), Homicide Unit, undercover officers, and 8th Precinct officers.”

Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing and will provide further details when more information becomes available.
