DETROIT (WWJ) -- The Detroit Police Department says a person of interest is now in custody in connection with a distressing aggravated assault caught on camera at a gas station.

Police said the incident happened at 5:50 p.m. Sunday, Father's Day, in the area of Hubbell and Tireman Ave. on the city's west side.

As seen in Project Green Light footage released by the DPD on Monday, the suspect — wearing a tan bucket hat and white tank top — pulls a handgun from the waistband on his shorts as he walks into the business.

The gunman the points the weapon at a man standing just inside the store, as the man is holding a small baby his arms just a few week away.

The victim acts quickly, throwing an arm up in an attempt protect himself and the infant. He knocks the gunman's hand away and there is a short scuffle before the armed suspect goes back out the door.

Commander Michael Chambers said a preliminary investigation found that the two men were strangers who'd gotten into an argument outside.

The baby, he told WWJ's Sandra McNeill, is the victim's 7-month-old son.

Chambers said thankfully, no one was hurt.

"It's upsetting, and it's difficult to look at," Chambers told McNeill.

"...Unfortunately there's just too much violence right now, and people need to put the guns down. It doesn't need to come to this, to endanger an individual and his child on Father's Day, just going up to the store. It's upsetting."

In a Monday afternoon update, police thanked the public for providing tips in the case. No information was immediately released about the man who was taken in for questioning.

As the investigation continues, anyone with information can call DPD 2nd Precinct Det. Rice 313-596-5240. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP, or submit your information online at this link.
