(WWJ) Police are hoping a tip from the public can help them to identify and arrest a crook posing as a utility worker Downriver.
Taylor Police said Wednesday they are looking for an imposter who had been passing himself as a DTE Energy employee, making his way into homes in the community and stealing money and jewelry.
The man is described as white, and around 40 years old.
During his last robbery, which occurred on Mortenview Drive, he wore a tan facemask and drove a small silver truck, police said.
On January 29, police said the suspect stole thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry from an unsuspecting elderly resident. He talked his way into her home by saying that he was with DTE, and that he needed to turn off her power. He also mentioned that she would get a $50 rebate as part of the program, and asked the resident several questions, including if she lived alone. He then told the woman that they should first check the home circuit breaker.
Eventually, the suspect lured the woman downstairs, turned the circuit breaker off, and asked her to remain there until he told her to turn it back on. Police said the man then went upstairs, stole cash and jewelry, and left.
It appears the same impostor has done this elsewhere in the community.
Anyone who encounters this man should call 911 immediately. Anyone with information that could help solve these crimes is ask to call Taylor Police at (734) 287-6611.
