CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) – A 17-year-old girl is dead after she lost control of her car and slammed into a garage outside of a home in Clinton Township Tuesday night.
Clinton Township police officials say the teen driver was headed east on 19 Mile Road near Romeo Plank Road shortly before 7:30 p.m. when her 2007 Chevy Cobalt was sideswiped by a 2013 Ford Explorer headed in the same direction.
The teen driver from Clinton Township lost control of the car, jumped a curb and ran across a grass boulevard, police officials said. The car then crashed through a fence, before hitting the corner of a detached garage.
The girl's parents have been notified, but authorities are not releasing her name at this time.
Clinton Township police officials say drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
The crash left 19 Mile Road closed between Garfield and Romeo Plank Roads. The closure was expected to last for some time.
The stretch of 19 Mile where the crash happened is straight, according to police. There is a posted speed limit of 45 mph and it has five lanes of traffic -- two in each direction and a turn lane.
Clinton Township police are investigating the crash and are asking any witnesses who saw it happen or otherwise has any information about the crash to contact the department at (586) 493-7802 and/or Lieutenant C. Allis at (586) 615-2525.
