OAKLAND TWP. (WWJ) -- Authorities are again asking for the public's help to identify a hit-and-run driver wanted in connection with the death of Shelby Township man on New Year's Day.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, just before 6 a.m. on Sunday, Jan 1, 22-year-old Benjamin Kable was walking along Rochester Road, near Whims Lane in Oakland Township, when he was hit by a car and killed.
The driver of the vehicle involved, described by a witness as a female of Asian descent, fled the scene.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said investigators are hoping that someone will call in a tip about the person, who was driving a white, gray, or silver BMW 3-series sedan from model years 2016 to 2018.
"It's hard to wrap your head around, you know, that someone could strike another human being and just leave them to die in the road," Bouchard told WWJ's Jon Hewett. "So, it's just really important that the public, who I'm sure does have information...make an anonymous call and help us bring closure to the friends and family of the deceased."
Kable was hit from behind and likely never saw the driver, Bouchard said.
The young man was a Michigan State University electrical engineering senior home visiting family for the holidays.
The ongoing investigation is being handled by the OCSO Crash Reconstruction Unit.
"Checking with folks in the area, checking with potential camera that may have recorded the vehicle coming or going or any of the actions. You know, there's a lot going on," the sheriff said. "That's why I believe we're going to find this person. They know they struck something and made a determination not to stay."
