TEMPERANCE, Mich. (WWJ) -- A 61-year-old man was shot and killed by a Michigan State Police trooper who responded to a domestic violence call in Monroe County over the weekend.

On Monday, MSP said its Second District Special Investigation Section is continuing to investigate the shooting involving a Monroe Post trooper, at a home in Temperance, near the Michigan-Ohio border, on Saturday.

MSP said Monroe County deputies were dispatched a little before noon about an armed man in the home, who'd fired several shots throughout the house.

According to a preliminary investigation, MSP said, Monroe County Sheriff's deputies and troopers had the house surrounded when the suspect came out and pointed a gun at one of the troopers.

The trooper fired several rounds from his departmental rifle, police said, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

No one else was hurt.

MSP said the yet-unnamed trooper, who has five years in service with the department, has been placed on leave.

Police noted that all of this information is preliminary, adding that investigation pends autopsy results, further investigation and prosecutor review.

The name of the man who was killed, and further details as to what may have led up to the shooting, has not been released.
