COURTLAND TWP. (WWJ) – A woman is dead after a crash in West Michigan involving a semi-truck carrying 80,000 lbs. of corn.
The 53-year-old woman was killed in the crash, which happened in Courtland Township, just north of Grand Rapids, Saturday afternoon, according to Michigan State Police.
MSP officials say the semi attempted to pass a car that was turning on the shoulder of 14 Mile Road, but side-swiped it and crossed the centerline.
The corn-hauling truck then slammed head-on into an SUV that was headed in the other direction.
A photo tweeted by the MSP 6th District shows the truck lying on its side, with corn spilled all over the road.
The victim was pronounced dead on-scene, while a passenger inside the SUV was taken to a hospital. Their condition was not known Sunday morning.
The road was closed for several hours while crews investigated and worked to clean up the massive mess of corn.
