(AP) -- A new office at the University of Michigan will focus on investigating sexual misconduct claims.

The Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office will offer support to victims, and also provide education to the greater U of M community. It will also address civil rights issues and other claims of discrimination.

Supervisors who work in the department will be prohibited from being involved in a romantic relationship with subordinates.

The creation of the office comes as sexual misconduct scandals involving a senior official and a longtime doctor have rocked the university.

University President Mark Schlissel says the goal is to have a campus where students and staff feel safe and secure in order to create the best learning environment possible.

“We really need to promote a climate on campus where people feel safe, and there’s mutual respect, and they feel supported so they can thrive,” Schlissel told The Associated Press.

The new, more robust office will replace the current Office for Institutional Equity.
