(WWJ) There's good news and bad news for Ford Motor Co. employees in Michigan.

Eligible Ford's blue collar workers in North America will be getting more than $3,000 each in profit sharing money this year.

The UAW-Ford contract calls for workers to receive $3,625 checks, which will be issued in March.

WWJ's Jeff Gilbert reports the payout was announced as the Dearborn-based automaker announced it lost $1.28 billion last year. Most of the losses were due to the coronavirus pandemic, which led to the shutdown of auto plants for about two months.

Meanwhile, news also came Thursday that some workers who make the Ford F-150 pickup in Dearborn will be temporarily laid off in the coming days.

Ford says the Dearborn Truck Plant will eliminate two shifts next week due to a shortage of computer chips.

Ford will also drop one shift at its Kansas City Assembly Plant in Missouri.

Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker said both plants are expected to return to three shifts the week of Feb. 15.

“We are working closely with suppliers to address potential production constraints tied to the global semiconductor shortage and working to prioritize key vehicle lines for production, making the most of our semiconductor allocation,” she said in an emailed statement.

The chips are used in the infotainment systems and other auto parts such as power steering.
