Unlicensed Detroit club shut down after police find nudity, alcohol being served to minors

(WWJ) Detroit Police have shut down a bar that was found to be operating without a license — among other alleged violations — on the city's west side.

The investigation into the Caribbean Club, on Proctor Street near Lonyo and I-94, began after the DPD received multiple noise complaints from nearby residents.

When officers looked into the matter, Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes said they found other concerning issues.

"Though information that we received from the community, we were made aware of this location, which involved complaints from noise to, more disturbingly, topless events being held," Hayes told WWJ's Jon Hewett and other reporters.

"Members of the Fourth Precinct and the police department who responded to this location... found instances of nudity inside, as well as liquor, or alcohol being sold to minors on two separate occasions."

The deputy chief said the club was also found to be operating without a license.

A man who claims to be a relative of the business' owner told Hewett the club was under new management and they had no idea about the licensing issue.

He also claimed that any nudity inside the establishment involved patrons — not staff.

Hayes had this message for anyone operating a shady business in the city:

"If we come into a business, we're gonna look around. We're gonna find out if you are operating lawfully, legally and responsibly," Hayes said, adding: "In this instance, that was not the case... So we're here to shut this business down."

There was no immediate information about any charges filed.
