(WWJ) – Winter is well underway in metro Detroit, albeit a delayed start to the snowy season.
After last weekend’s snow storm, United States Postal Service communications specialist Elizabeth Najduch says it’s important to be courteous to your USPS mail carriers.
“Please be responsible and help the letter carrier to deliver their mail,” she told WWJ’s Brooke Allen.
While Najduch says there’s always a concern for slips, trips and falls throughout the year, it’s important to be particularly cautious during the winter months.
Be sure to keep your shovels and salt handy as the USPS is asking residents to clear snow and ice from sidewalks, steps, porches, areas around mailboxes and anywhere else mail carriers might have to go.
“Snow and ice make delivery dangerous and slow,” said District Manager Richard Moreton, Michigan 1 District. “Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox – including steps, porches, walkways and street approach – will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service.”
“Even if they have curbside delivery, make sure that a vehicle is clear to come up to the curbside to deliver,” Najduch said.
Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes.
“The Postal Service curtails delivery only after careful consideration, and only as a last resort,” Moreton said. “Any curtailed mail is attempted the next delivery day.”
