WALLED LAKE (WWJ) -- A false alarm prompted a lockdown and a massive police response Tuesday morning at Walled Lake Central High School in Walled Lake.

School officials are expected to announce details on student-parent reunification when the lockdown is lifted. As of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, parents are waiting outside in the cold for their children to be released from the school.

Captain Dale Miller --with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department -- said a student told the office that he heard something about a possible disruption at the school.

Administrators then put the school in lockdown and Miller said during all of that, people may have mistaken the sound of desks being overturned as gunfire.

"I think everybody -- kids, students, schools and police are tense," said Miller.

Multiple departments responded to the school and the building was searched thoroughly -- an "all clear" was given. Miller said the school did everything right in this situation.

"We have to err on the side of abundance of caution," said the captain.

It was confirmed that no shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said it received a report at around 8:30 a.m. of shots fired at the high school. which immediately went into lockdown.

In an update, the OCSO said investigators cleared the building and determined that there was no gunfire at the school and that no one was hurt.

The sheriff's office said is has cancelled additional police response to the high school, but the investigation continues as to the source of the original 911 call.

There were multiple OCSO units and other local police departments on scene as police completed a primary and a secondary search of the school building.
