Buyers should never really be sure what they’re getting, said Kent Kleinschmidt, acting special agent in charge, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Detroit Field Division.

“These counterfeit pills that we are seeing out of Mexico are manufactured in warehouses, barns and garages,” he said. “And the powders are blended together in blenders and are punched out to look like the real thing.”

About half the pills on the streets right now contain a lethal dose of fentanyl, a DEA report estimated. The pills may be the same color and have the same print on them as the real thing, but they were made by Mexican cartels and trafficked into the country, Kleinschmidt said.
