Wayne County corrections officer shot and killed while off-duty in Detroit

"We’re going to do all we can find out what happened," Sheriff Raphael Washington said

(WWJ) The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the tragic death of a corrections officer, who was gunned down while off-duty in Detroit.

Investigators said Officer Devante Jones, 23, was shot several times as he was dropping someone off in the area of East Forest and Chrysler Service Drive, early Monday morning.

After his vehicle was shot multiple times, Jones got out and tried to escape.

Found wounded, Jones was rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly before 5 a.m.

The WCSO and Detroit Police Department are both investigating

A motive for the killing is unknown, and no suspects in the slaying have been described as officials said details are still developing.

Jones' family has been notified.

“We offer our condolences and prayers to the family who have lost their loved one in the most tragic way,” said Sheriff Raphael Washington, in a statement. “This resonates with all of us on the job. We’re going to do all we can find out what happened.”

Jones joined the department in October 2019 and worked in Jail Division I.

He left a growing family behind.

"He's got one kid, and he's got one on the way," Under Sheriff Mike Jafer told WWJ's Erin Vee. "I was told his wife or significant other is due in November."

Jafer said the department is in mourning.

"It's a very sad day in Wayne County and across the state. Anytime you lose a human being, let alone a police officer, you know... this is not supposed to happen."
